Are DREAM Activists the Freedom Riders of our Time?

Like the Freedom Riders of the 60’s, the young men and women currently engaged in protesting the injustices of a system that denies the rights of 12 million people living and working in communities all over America, could very well be at the vanguard of a new Civil Rights movement in this country.

In the current political environment, comprehensive immigration reform will be difficult to achieve and although it’s my opinion that we should address it sooner rather than later, the political will may not exist to deal with such a contentious issue anytime soon.  Even though I find the current sate of stasis on the question of comprehensive immigration reform intolerable, there is something else that we can do to address the specific predicament of a smaller but critical segment of the immigrant population. I am talking about supporting passage of the DREAM Act. All across the U.S., despite the danger posed by their actions, the activities of various student and immigrant rights groups are focusing attention on the plight of 65,000 students that graduate high school every year into a life of anonymity, segregation and hopelessness.

The DREAM Act has bipartisan support and its passage would be a big step forward in helping an immigrant population whose ambition and industry continues to define the spirit of this great nation.  It would also be a much needed step forward in retaining the talent and contributions of a segment of the population that has the potential to continue to keep us great.

Go to the links below to read some of the many articles being written about these brave young people and their nascent movement.  And so I ask you again, could these activists be the Freedom Riders of our time?
