Happy Dia De Los Muertos!

Happy Halloween and Dia de los Muertos! Tonight, I will be celebrating Halloween by baby-sitting my brother's house (and passing out some candy to the neighborhood kids that come knocking), while he takes his baby girl out trick or treating in the neighborhood.  A great American tradition and one that I will celebrate not only tonight, but also tomorrow, by attending a Halloween Ball. But as a Hispanic American, I will also be celebrating another tradition, a tradition known as el "Dia de los Muertos," and observed throughout the Latino world. Undocumented Activists Follow LGBT Tactics

Great piece on how the DREAM movement has brought together different advocacy tactics. Sea change for immigration politics

An interesting opinion piece by Politico on the change of immigration politics. [caption id="attachment_1294" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Politicians are finally catching up to demographic reality."][/caption] Not so long ago, conservatives could use anti-immigrant positioning to rally their base and as a political wedge against moderates. Progressives, meanwhile, could promote pro-immigration policies — but couldn’t gain leverage with moderates or against conservatives. So conservatives’ anti-immigrant legislative agenda set the terms of the national debate. But t

Why ‘illegal immigrant’ is a slur

An interesting read on how 'illegal immigrant' is a slur and how the Supreme Court took this into account regarding SB1010 in Arizona. The Hispanic Vote in 2012

One of the biggest stories of the 2012 Presidential Election is the Hispanic or Latin@ vote.  It’s all over the blogosphere and it’s taking up headline space on some of the biggest names in print journalism. In a recent Pew Hispanic Center survey and analysis, released at the end of last year (Dec, 2011), Pew states that the Latin@ vote has recorded substantial growth in the last couple of decades, and that Latin@ participation in the electoral process has been rising.  This makes sense because the number of Latin@s in the nation and therefore, the number of eligible Latin@ voters res

Pennsylvania DREAMers Making a Difference

A Daily Pennsylvanian article reports on the march for immigrant rights, joined by activists from the DreamActivist Pa. chapter, that took place in Philadelphia yesterday. From the article: "Rep. Tony Payton (D-Phila.) of the 179th Legislative District who introduced the Pennsylvania DREAM Act — which would offer undocumented high-school graduates in-state tuition for Pennsylvania state colleges under specific conditions — also made an appearance at the event. “We organized this event to call out President Obama for not owning up to his word and continuing to deport indivi
