Happy Dia De Los Muertos!

Happy Halloween and Dia de los Muertos!

Tonight, I will be celebrating Halloween by baby-sitting my brother’s house (and passing out some candy to the neighborhood kids that come knocking), while he takes his baby girl out trick or treating in the neighborhood.  A great American tradition and one that I will celebrate not only tonight, but also tomorrow, by attending a Halloween Ball.

But as a Hispanic American, I will also be celebrating another tradition, a tradition known as el “Dia de los Muertos,” and observed throughout the Latino world.

The 3-day observances pay tribute to relatives long gone.  The celebrants also acknowledge that they too, will one day  join their departed beloved, and typical costumes involve elaborate and artful “skull” makeup, such as that in the caption above.

So Friday night I will also be attending a “Dia De Los Muertos” Ball, in full skull makeup and Mariachi outfit.

As a Hispanic American I revel in both traditions, but I shall make use of the North American one by asking that in the months ahead, after the Presidential Election is over, we turn our attention to the passage of immigration reform.

Now that would be a real treat!
