The March

We met up with Juan at Saxby’s and grabbed ourselves a coffee before heading out to join the rest of the Georgetown University contingent. I was pleasantly and mildly surprised that it turned out to be such a crisp and sun-filled morning, something you can’t completely rely on this early in the transition from Winter to Spring in Washington, DC. It made the walk to the front gates of campus an absolute joy.

We talked about plans for the rally and decided how we would approach the rest of the day. We concluded that Chris O’Leary would get footage of Juan on his way to the rally and AT the rally, while I would roam the Mall getting crowd shots. We pretty much stuck to this plan, although by the end of the day we were both roaming the crowd. It felt nice to shoot again…something I haven’t really done in a few years.

costs aside

There were over 200,000 people in the Mall that day and the media barely paid any attention. I guess that the rally was overshadowed by the passage of health care reform, a bill that President Obama would sign into law just a couple of days after the March for America took place.

Or it could also be that it didn’t make much of a splash because the great majority of marchers there were the immigrants themselves, which makes sense, and the rest of the country just wasn’t paying attention. I wonder how many rallies attended by blacks marching for their freedom went unnoticed during the height of the Civil Rights movement?
