Peaceful Protest Could Lead to Deportation for DREAM Activists

"They knew they were risking deportation by staging this peaceful show of disobedience but while they may have been born in another country, each considers the U.S. home, and how could their "country" deport them so recklessly when it wasn't even their fault that they grew up here?"Indianepilepsyassociation.org The above is a direct quote from a post I found at Latina Lista and it encapsulates exactly what so many students like Juan Gomez are fighting for.  They are fighting to stay in the only home they've ever really known. The "Dream Act 5" as they are being called, staged a peaceful sit

WOW! You've Got to See this Video!

This video footage, taken in front of Arizona Senator John McCain's office in Tucson, is absolutely riveting...and shows that there are small protests and events, related to the issue of immigration, taking place under our very noses.  Once again, after Arizona passed new, and very tough, immigration legislation, the issue SEEMS to have gone underground.  But this is only due to the media's attention deficit disorder which has now been distracted by the BP oil spill, the Bangkok protests and the near meltdown of the European economy (after Greece almost went belly up). This video, however,

Alonso Chehade, Walter Lara & DREAM TV

Alonso Chehade, a DREAM ACTivist from the state of Washington, and an immigrant with a similar story as Juan Gomez's, has been blogging and vlogging for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) on the Trail of Dreams walkers and his lobbying visit to Washington, DC.  He flew to our nation's capital on April 29th and met up with Walter Lara, another immigrant with an interesting story to tell and subsequently, also met with the Trail of Dreams walkers in front of the White House...you can follow his adventures by reading the blog and viewing the videos on the SEIU site. Simon Cho, US Olympic Speed Skater, Speaks Out for the DREAM Act

Another twist in a story too often told -- and not heard often enough -- of the incredible talent, dedication and hard work that immigrants the world over bring to our country.  Why do we continue to turn a deaf ear to these stories?  Why do we continue to shut our doors to the talent that has made this nation great? In the words of Cho himself..."In the beginning, I found my own story to be embarrassing, but now I feel like ... I have to let people know and open people’s eyes." Yes, we have to continue telling people these stories until they open their eyes. To read the full Daily Brui

From the President of the University of Arizona

"Foreign students who have come to study at American universities are responsible for huge portions of the gains this nation has made in technology, medicine, materials, and so many other academic areas critical to our nation's defense and economic prosperity. We must do everything possible to ensure that these students continue to feel welcomed and respected, despite the unmistakably negative message that this bill sends to many of them." In his letter addressing the recent passage of Arizona's new immigration law, University of Arizona President Robert N. Shelton directly pinpoints the prob

The DREAM Walkers

Yesterday evening we packed our gear and headed to Georgetown University to hear the DREAM walkers address a crowd of young students gathered there (and to capture the event on film because Juan Gomez would also be talking there).  The original walkers are Felipe Matos, Gaby Pacheco, Carlos Roa and Juan Rodriguez and they decided to walk 1,500 miles from Miami, FL to Washington, DC, to bring attention to the plight of undocumented students in the U.S. and to fight for passage of the DREAM Act.  After almost four months of walking they are nearly at their destination.  This Saturday (May 1),
