Are DREAM Activists the Freedom Riders of our Time?

Like the Freedom Riders of the 60's, the young men and women currently engaged in protesting the injustices of a system that denies the rights of 12 million people living and working in communities all over America, could very well be at the vanguard of a new Civil Rights movement in this country. In the current political environment, comprehensive immigration reform will be difficult to achieve and although it's my opinion that we should address it sooner rather than later, the political will may not exist to deal with such a contentious issue anytime soon.  Even though I find the current s

Peaceful Protest Could Lead to Deportation for DREAM Activists

"They knew they were risking deportation by staging this peaceful show of disobedience but while they may have been born in another country, each considers the U.S. home, and how could their "country" deport them so recklessly when it wasn't even their fault that they grew up here?"Indianepilepsyassociation.org The above is a direct quote from a post I found at Latina Lista and it encapsulates exactly what so many students like Juan Gomez are fighting for.  They are fighting to stay in the only home they've ever really known. WOW! You've Got to See this Video!

This video footage, taken in front of Arizona Senator John McCain's office in Tucson, is absolutely riveting...and shows that there are small protests and events, related to the issue of immigration, taking place under our very noses.  Once again, after Arizona passed new, and very tough, immigration legislation, the issue SEEMS to have gone underground.  But this is only due to the media's attention deficit disorder which has now been distracted by the BP oil spill, the Bangkok protests and the near meltdown of the European economy (after Greece almost went belly up). This video, however,

Simon Cho, US Olympic Speed Skater, Speaks Out for the DREAM Act

Another twist in a story too often told -- and not heard often enough -- of the incredible talent, dedication and hard work that immigrants the world over bring to our country.  Why do we continue to turn a deaf ear to these stories?  Why do we continue to shut our doors to the talent that has made this nation great? In the words of Cho himself..."In the beginning, I found my own story to be embarrassing, but now I feel like ... I have to let people know and open people’s eyes." Yes, we have to continue telling people these stories until they open their eyes. To read the full Daily Brui
